What to Wear for Family Photos

September 16, 2026
It’s the question I hear from nearly every family. What you wear shapes how your photos feel, whether they read as timeless or dated in five years, and how well everyone blends together in the frame.
Start With a Color Palette, Not a Dress Code
Choose 3–4 shades that work well together: soft neutrals, warm earth tones or muted jewel tones. Everyone doesn’t need to match, but every color should feel like it belongs in the same photo. It’s more flattering, more timeless and far less stressful than coordinating identical outfits.
Tip: dress one person first (usually Mom), then build everyone else around that outfit.

Colors That Photograph Beautifully
Neutrals
Soft colors
Darker accents
Mix Textures Before You Add Patterns
Waffle knits, linen blends, chunky sweaters and soft denim add depth without competing for attention. Save bold prints for one person at most, and skip large logos, graphics or busy patterns, since they pull the eye away from faces.

Dress for the Season & Location
Most sessions here happen outdoors, so think about what feels comfortable and looks good against your backdrop.
Princeton & Stone
Cream, ivory, sage, dusty blue, camel and navy pair beautifully with warm stone and ivy. See the locations.
Gardens & Beach
Gardens already bring color, so go soft: sage, blush, lavender, cream. At the beach, keep it airy with sand, oatmeal and light denim.
Fall & Winter
Camel, rust, olive, chocolate and navy. Layer knits, jackets, scarves and boots for texture. See fall minis.

Comfort Comes First, Especially for Kids
Choose clothes little ones can move, sit and play in. Stiff fabrics or scratchy tags almost always show up as a fussy expression on camera. Break in new shoes beforehand and pack a backup outfit just in case.
A relaxed, comfortable kid photographs so much better than one in a perfectly matched but itchy outfit.
